Embracing the Power of Stillness
"Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” – Psalm 46:10 (ESV)
In a world that glorifies being busy, where productivity feels like the ultimate goal, stillness can feel like weakness. But Psalm 46:10 reminds us that stillness is not passivity—it’s power. It’s the deliberate act of stopping, stepping back, and recognizing that God is in control.
Being still doesn’t mean sitting idle or avoiding responsibility. It means quieting the noise of the world and the chaos of our minds to focus on the One who holds everything together. It’s a reminder that our strength doesn’t come from our hustle; it comes from knowing God and trusting His sovereignty.
Stillness requires surrender. It’s letting go of the need to fix everything and acknowledging that God’s wisdom is far greater than ours. It’s a pause in the middle of the battle, where we stop striving and start trusting. When we embrace stillness, we position ourselves to hear God’s voice, to feel His peace, and to rest in His presence.
For many of us, stillness feels uncomfortable. We’re wired to act, to solve, to push forward. But God calls us to a different rhythm—one where we pause and lean into Him. Why? Because in the stillness, we remember who He is: our refuge, our strength, and our ever-present help in trouble. We’re reminded that the battles we face aren’t fought in our strength, but in His.
So, what does it look like to “be still” in your daily life? It might mean starting your day in prayer before jumping into the demands of work. It could mean taking a break from the constant noise of social media to focus on God’s Word. It’s choosing to pause in moments of stress to remind yourself, “God’s got this.” Stillness isn’t the absence of action—it’s intentional dependence on the God who never fails.
Men, strength isn’t just about doing—it’s about trusting. It’s about knowing when to stop, breathe, and let God be God. In the quiet moments, He renews our strength and prepares us for what’s ahead.
Prayer:
Lord, teach us to embrace stillness. Help us to stop striving and start trusting in Your power and presence. Remind us that our strength comes from You, not from our own efforts. In the quiet moments, help us to hear Your voice and find peace in Your promises. May we rest in the knowledge that You are God and that You are in control. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Action Step:
This week, set aside 10 minutes each day to be still before God. Turn off distractions, sit in silence, and focus on His presence. Use this time to pray, reflect on Psalm 46:10, and surrender any burdens you’re carrying. Trust that in the stillness, God is working and renewing your strength.
