Built on the Rock

Built on the Rock

"Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock." – Matthew 7:24 (ESV)

Men, let’s talk foundations. Life can feel like a storm sometimes, can’t it? The wind howls, the waves crash, and it seems like everything around us is shaking. But here’s the thing: what’s going to keep you standing when the storm hits? Jesus answers that question clearly in Matthew 7:24. He says the wise man builds his house on the rock. And that rock? It’s Him. It’s His Word. It’s the unshakeable truth of the Gospel.

When we build our lives on Jesus—on His teachings, His character, and His promises—no storm can take us down. It doesn’t mean the storm won’t come; it will. We’re not promised smooth sailing in this life. In fact, we’re told to expect trials and challenges. But what we are promised is that when we’re anchored in Christ, we can stand firm no matter what comes our way.

Building on the rock isn’t about just knowing the truth; it’s about putting it into action. Jesus doesn’t say the wise man is the one who simply hears His words—He says it’s the one who hears and does them. Faith isn’t just belief; it’s active obedience. It’s living out what we say we believe.

What does that look like in real life? It looks like choosing God’s ways when it’s hard. It looks like loving your family when you’re tired. It looks like standing up for your faith when it’s unpopular. It looks like trusting God when you can’t see the whole picture. These are the moments that test your foundation.

If you’re building your life on anything other than Jesus—whether it’s your career, your success, your reputation, or even your own strength—you’re building on sand. And when the storm comes, it’s all going to crumble. But when your life is grounded in Christ, you’re standing on solid ground. He’s your rock, your refuge, and your firm foundation. And no storm is stronger than Him.

So, where’s your foundation today? Are you building on the rock, or are you building on sand? It’s not too late to make a change. Start today by digging deep into the Word of God, by seeking His presence in prayer, and by living out His truth in every area of your life. When your foundation is firm, you’ll be unshakeable—no matter what storms may come.

Prayer:

Father, You are our firm foundation. Thank You for being the rock that we can build our lives on. We confess that there are times when we’ve built on things that don’t last—our own strength, our own plans, our own desires. Forgive us, Lord, and help us to rebuild on You. Teach us to hear Your words and to put them into practice in our daily lives. When the storms of life come, remind us that we are anchored in You, and that nothing can shake us when we stand on Your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Action Step:

Take a moment this week to evaluate your foundation. Ask yourself: What am I building my life on? Is it Christ, or something else? Spend time in Matthew 7:24-27 and reflect on the areas where you need to be more rooted in Jesus and His Word. Then, take a practical step toward strengthening that foundation—whether it’s committing to daily Scripture reading, joining a small group for accountability, or simply spending more intentional time in prayer. Build on the Rock, and you’ll stand strong in every storm.
